[1] Sediments & Morphologies of Time

How does matter store time? How quickly or slowly does matter visibly change and what role does this play in collections? How does this relate to practices of activation, passivation, and conservation of objects? Through fieldwork in the Humboldt Collections, we explore questions about the relationship between time and matter. Starting points are the weathered stones of the Geological-Geomorphological Collection. They are an active material, but the millions of years it takes them to take shape, decay, and regenerate are beyond human scale. In our exhibition, rain, wind, snow, and plant roots have created morphologies of time; and time painted its colours into the soils through weathering processes.

How can you touch time and translate the fine surface structure and the dense mass of stones into an experience in the exhibition space? Can weathered stones be understood as an embodiment of the concepts of remembering and collecting in museums?
