[13] Cohabitation Matters

We cohabit with materials. They shape our body movements, mood, culture and politics. We move slower on graveled ground, we are under stress as a wooden beam and live behind plastic walls with a “stone look.” We build houses for our data. Rethinking the materiality of our surroundings stretches the space for human habitat towards cohabitation.

Apart from meteorites, all matter that we use for our surroundings, be it biotechnology or crafting is finite on this planet. It circulates in time with support of the solar and cosmic rays from outer space. Humans became radical bioturbators. By excavating, extracting, and moving matter, we reshape the planet and beyond in a process called anthroturbation. It is a phenomenon without precedent in Earth’s history.

Can touching a wall made out of millions of years-old stone contribute to research about the complex circulation of matter in space-time?
